Google Play Trends 2014

 12 Dec 2014  BoringBrands Blog

If you’re in the business of mobile app marketing, you know how important timing the market is. Well, your prayers have been answered, as Google has just revealed vital stats from the Play Store for the year 2014.

Most Downloaded App Categories

The most happening app categories on Play Store are:

  • Education

  • Health & Fitness

  • Music

  • Photography

  • Social

  • Entertainment

  • Sports

  • Travel

But perhaps most importantly, Health & Fitness was the fastest growing category in Play Store.

Most Downloaded Games

When we talk of app downloads, how can games stay behind?! Here are the five games that surged to the top in 2014:

  • Candy Crush Saga

  • Don’t Tap the White Tile

  • Farm Heroes Saga

  • Subway Surfers

  • Clash of Titans

Notice something interesting? The top five games do not follow a pattern; while Candy Crush Saga is the remake of a classic, Subway Surfers is inspired by Temple Run, and Don’t Tap the White Tile is a radically new concept. Strategy games, which once ruled the PC era, are also popular. In other words, if you’re looking to make a popular game, just make sure it is damn good and addictive.

Movies & TV

Frozen is the Movie of the Year on Google Play, with which Disney has scored an ace once again. The Walking Dead, the intense and additive TV series, became the TV Show of the Year.

The book that came out on top was John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, arguably boosted by its box office adaptation. However, that doesn’t take away anything from the greatness of the book. On number second was Fifty Shades of Grey, followed by Divergent, Twelve Years a Slave, and Insurgent.

All in all, it’s been a pretty exciting year, as Google Play seems to have gathered momentum. If only Google had also revealed the numbers, but we’re not complaining!
